What a year, am I right? 2020 has been a ride and a half, but we made it! 2021! I want to say it’ll be a great year, but I don’t want to jinx it (fingers crossed, knock on wood, sign of the cross, etc.) It’s a new year and as always, there’s a temptation to look back on the past and take stock of what we did or didn’t accomplish in the past year.

Let’s put a pin in that for a moment…

Managing life with diabetes can be a balancing act on its own, but when you throw in a pandemic, wildfires and murder hornets, I think it’s fair to give yourself a break if you didn’t meet your health targets.

Take a moment to pat yourself on the back if you did the smallest thing. Did you check your blood sugar? Bravo. Did you try eating some fruit? Well done. Did you make it to the new year? You’re a Rockstar!

Okay, we’re done with that, take 2020, ball it up and throw it in the trash. Look towards 2021. In the spirit of the new year, let’s do something radical together. Let’s make new year resolutions for our health and actually keep them

This 2021, Here Are 4 New Year Resolutions You Can Try:

Exercise At Least 30 – 50 Minutes A Week:

Get that blood flowing! Physical activity can help manage blood glucose levels, contribute to weight loss and can improve your overall mood and wellbeing. You can use resources online to build your own exercise routine, or partner with one of our health providers at 360Care to craft a personalized routine. Whatever you choose, make a commitment this year to get up and move for at least 10 minutes a day, 3 – 5 days a week. That’s how you start building a habit.

Check Your Blood Glucose (BG) Levels Daily:

If you are living with Diabetes, checking blood sugar is the only way you’ll know if your medication, diet and exercise is working for you. Doing this will tell you whether you’re going in the right direction in terms of your health goals. Speak with your diabetes team or with one of our health experts at 360Care to determine the frequency and timing of checks that will work for you.  I know it can be slightly uncomfortable, but don’t worry, you can do this!

Educate Yourself About Your Condition:

The best way to make the right choices for your health is to equip yourself with knowledge. Gathering the right resources about diet, exercise, insulin and linked health issues will help you take your life into your hands. A great resource for information about diabetes is Diabète Canada. You can also seek help from a professional health coach if you need to clarify something. When you have knowledge, you have the ability to listen to your health care providers and understand why they want you to do what they advise. You will have to power to make the best choices for you.

Try One New Recipe A Month:

Whether you like to cook or you just want to have more control over your diet, there is a variety of resources that can teach you how to cook delicious, diabetes-friendly dishes. Diabetes Canada has several recipes like this tasty strawberry breakfast. You can check our blog for more recipes later, and our 360Care Health Application provides round the clock assistance from qualified dieticians who can partner with you in crafting a personalized meal plan.

All in all, you are the master of your fate and the captain of your soul. You are in charge of your health. Make this new year count. And if you need an accountability partner, just remember that we’re rooting for you over here at 360Care
